The Minstrel's Journey

Poem written in 1953 by Roger Descombes of twenty-four lines on a pastoral theme which complements well an engraving by him entitled "Paysage" of about the same date.
Translation into English by Louise, April 2013.

"Tell me bird of this wood,

have you seen Minstrel lately?"

"Yes, he was here on this rock playing tunes during our end of year concerts.

Then he went on his way following the river bank.

He went away slowly breathless."

"Tell me reed of this water bank,

have you seen Minstrel lately?"

"Yes, he hid amongst us

Head on knees and muttered a few verses

While looking at the sky in the river."

"And since then?"

"He left

sinking in slowly."

"Tell me Fish

have you seen Minstrel?"

"We saw a green boy

naked and stretched out

Balancing himself in the stratosphere of the universe

to the sound of gentle music.

Since then he has gone towards the sea."

Roger Descombes, 1953
